Hovah Philanthropy: Jay-Z and Mom, Gloria Carter, Host "Royal Carnival"

Via MTV:  On Thursday night, Jay-Z hosted a carnival at the Hudson River Park pier for his Shawn Carter Foundation. But it wasn't all Ferris wheels and funnel cakes — unfortunately Momofuku doesn't make those. The event was called Making the Ordinary Extraordinary, and it sought to raise funds for college scholarships.

MTV News caught up with Mr. Carter at the event, where he said the evening was about having fun while raising money for a good cause. Jay said two of the worst things in life are a waste of talent and a person who applies him- or herself but is unable to advance due to financial hardship. He hoped this foundation would help ease such burdens and assist people in recognizing their potential.

The Great Eight: Jay-Z Set to Roc Eight Shows at the Barclays Center

Via NY Daily News: Rap mogul Jay-Z will headline a series of concerts to open Brooklyn's new Nets arena next fall - and will make it official Monday: The team will be named for his hometown.

The superstar, who owns a small piece of the soon-to-be renamed Brooklyn Nets, will perform at eight concerts to celebrate the grand opening of the arena - where all-access passes are going for up to $15,400 a season.

Jay-Z likely will be joined by his wife, Beyoncé - who by then will have given birth to the couple's first child - at one of the shows, and will bring on a series of other performers, sources said.

Jay-Z Set to Open Barclays Center in September 2012

Via Roc Nation:  Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter announced today that he will be the first performer to play the Barclays Center of Brooklyn when the venue opens in September 2012.

Speaking at a major press event on the plaza at Atlantic Terminal, overlooking the under-construction Barclays Center, JAY-Z also revealed that ownership of Brooklyn’s future NBA franchise has chosen Brooklyn Nets as the team’s name.

JAY-Z was joined on the dais by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Forest City Ratner Companies Chairman and CEO Bruce Ratner, and Barclays Center and Nets CEO Brett Yormark.

“From the moment the Barclays Center became a reality, I knew this meant something significant for Brooklyn,” said JAY-Z. “This is where I’m from, I’ll always be Brooklyn, and opening this arena will mean more to me than anywhere else. I also look forward to opening night for the Brooklyn Nets. We’re going to create an atmosphere like only Brooklyn can.”

“Brooklyn is where legends are made and dreams come true—and no one proves it more than our very own JAY-Z, a dedicated philanthropist, innovative artist, entrepreneur and cultural icon who, as a Nets investor, helped take my vision of bringing a professional basketball team to the ‘center court’ of Brooklyn and drove it in for the layup,” said Borough President Markowitz. “I am thrilled to join Bruce Ratner, FCRC, Brett Yormark, and the Nets organization today in announcing that JAY-Z will perform at the opening of the Barclays Center. As for the selection of the Brooklyn team name, was there ever any doubt? It’s ‘nothing but Nets!’”

Katy Talks Queen B Again; "Adopts the Beyonce' Leg"

Via People:  She’s rocked everything from pink hair to candy-coated costumes, but lately, fashion-forward singer Katy Perry has looked to fellow style star Beyoncé for some trend-setting inspiration.

“I’ve adopted the Beyoncé leg,” she says in the October issue of InStyle, in which she flaunts her lavender locks. “When I saw her on tour, she had these glowing legs.” So Perry decided to get to the bottom of those glimmering gams, ASAP. The secret? “They’re Wolford neon 40 tights,” she reveals. “I put them on first, and then over them I wear a Capezio fishnet that has been bedazzled. I do lots of layers. I’m like an artichoke.”

Boyz II Men Talk Beyonce's "Countdown"

Via MTV: When Beyoncé dropped 4 earlier this year, she paid homage to her roots by sampling Boyz II Men. The singer used the countdown portion of their track "Uhh Ahh" on her I'm-so-in-love party track "Countdown."

The song is all about the rapture of true love, with Beyoncé happily declaring her devotion to that special man in her life. So were the guys happy about her decision to include them on the album? "I thought it was very clever," Wanya Morris told MTV News earlier this week when he stopped by to chat about the latest Boyz II Men album, Twenty. "She's a clever artist. She's one of the best in the business right now. I guess you can say we finally got our duet with Beyoncé."

The guys are certainly having a moment this year, thanks to the sample and their work with Justin Bieber. They say that Beyoncé's decision to use their song on the lively track was pretty surprising, even though they have a bit of history with Queen B.

Queen B Gives Back: Beyonce's "I Was Here" Becomes Soundtrack for "Great Futures Start Here" Campaign

B's I Was Here, was chosen by the Boys & Girls Clubs, for their new, "Great Futures Start Here" campaign.

Via Boys & Girls Club:  The soundtrack for the PSA is the song "I Was Here," performed by multiple Grammy®-winning singer- songwriter Beyonce, and written by multiple Grammy®-winning songwriter Diane Warren. The track is featured on Beyonce's latest album, "4," and was donated by Warren, Beyonce and Sony Music Entertainment for exclusive use in the spot.

"We wanted the most powerful piece of music possible, to underscore the dramatic message that what we do today to shape the future of our children is vitally important," said director Ron Howard. "We could not have picked a more moving track. Diane's words and Beyonce's delivery are over the top."
