The Huffington Post is reporting that a man being called the "Berlin Patient" who was living with HIV and was being treated for Leukemia is "cured" of HIV. The "cure" is a result of the stem cell treatment he recieved as a part of his Leukemia treatment. The doctors reported that after long-term treatment of "immune reconstitution" the patient no longer showed signs of HIV, meaning his body was free of the disease. They stated: "During the process of immune reconstitution, we found evidence for the replacement of long-lived host tissue cells with donor-derived cells indicating that the size of the viral reservoir has been reduced over time. In conclusion, our results strongly suggest that cure of HIV has been achieved in this patient."
This is a major breakthrough! I can't believe it! I hope that this isn't just a one case thing. This will help so many who are suffering with this disease. This however, isn't a free pass to reckless and senseless living. Respect yourself and your body!
